a couple of hours on the Tohickon

May, 2003

It had been less than a week and I was still buzzing from being in Colorado. My only thoughts were to get back on the water as fast as possible.

Tom called on a Saturday afternoon and wondered if I wanted to head out. To me, it seemed like one of the most ridiculous questions I'd ever heard. The only question was "where?" Not wanting to drive too far, we decided to head up to Ralph Stover and see what kind of shape the Tohickon was in, and see if it was still holding any trout that had been stocked earlier that spring.

The Tohickon is a runoff stream from Lake Nockamixon, and dumps into the Delaware in Point Pleasant, PA. Needless to say, once the warm weather hits, any stocked fish either make their way into the Delaware, or turn belly up. It's just not conducive for wild trout.

Seeing one other angler, a fellow fly fisherman, we figured we just head down to the edge and see if anything was going on. We saw a couple of rises on the opposite side of the bank, just below the shadow of a covered bridge. We got our gear together and staked out our spots, making sure we weren't disturbing the fellow there before us. Turns out, he'd just fished through where we were, but considering that there were still rising fish and he had a streamer tied on, we decided to stay put and put our dries to the test.

I hooked-up first, and it was surprisingly large (by my standards) for a stocked fish. Turns out it was about 12 inches long...a nice rainbow.
